
| When Banking Theory and Practice was first published nearly half a century ago in 1961, it was primarily tailor-made to suit the needs of undergraduate students. This focus still remains, and additionally the numerous revisions it has undergone have substantially deepened and widened the book in scope and contents. As a result, it is now popular with a much wider section of the reading public including professional bankers and those who pursue more advanced and practice-oriented studies on the subject. The nineteenth edition has been necessitated by the constant growth of the subject as a result of changes in legislation, the growing globalisation of banking business generally and the expansion of banking business to meet the needs of the customers for a wider range of services. A new chapter ''Changing Dimensions of Regulatory and Supervisory Framework'' has been added to focus on regulation and supervision of banking institutions. The chapter ''Non-Banking Financial Companies'' has been altogether rewritten to incorporate the operations of the non-bank financial companies and the steps taken by the authorities to facilitate the disciplined growth of these institutions. The chapter ''Changing Profile of Indian Banking'' has been re-written to highlight the achievements of the banking system and the challenges ahead in the context of the need to play by the new rules with the onset of the reforms and to emerge a winner under tomorrow''s conditions. Appendices to various chapters are a new feature of this edition. The information provided through these appendices will, it is hoped, be highly useful to the readers, especially since these being elaboration of the points covered in the chapters. Apart from updating of material, changes have been made in the topics covered by various chapters. In addition the subject matter has been thoroughly revised and statistical data have been updated by making use of the latest available information.
